College Football Betting
The college football season was a wild one, especially for those people who make the bets. If you followed college football betting at all in 2008, then you probably were taken aback by some of the things that happened during the game. It seems like every football bet that I made this year was a good one, but that doesn’t mean that I won every time. The offseason is the perfect time to take a huge step back and break down some of the mistakes and some of the trends that we all could learn from if we want to get better at college football betting.
This was the year of the trap game. Many, many people made a football bet this year that they swore to their friends could not lose. It was that bet, of course, that looks too good to be true. The sports books, at least in this year, were very good at getting a lot of the public money on these “too good” lines, only to see the game go the other way. What we should have noticed about college football betting this year is that when the public is betting on an underdog, it is time to look the other way when sports betting.
This year there was a football bet that won more times than it lost. If you were smart enough to bet on home underdogs on ESPN’s Thursday night games, you probably made huge money. There is a reason for this and people who are experienced in college football betting know this reason. When a team has to go on the road on Thursday night, they miss out on an awful lot of practice time. This means that they home team has a leg up on practice and they are also much more in routine. Having to go on the road during the week is not natural for a team, and it has an impact on their play.
Another one of the college football betting trends that we learned about this year is that on Tuesday night, the under was a great bet. Teams do not have the time to put in a great gameplan when they play that early in the week, and the under has been a consistent winner there over the last few years. Another contributing factor for this football bet is that many times, teams with lower quality athletes play on Tuesday night, so the scoring is going to be hard to come by. |
